Nanomachines are not a recent development, having been used to terraform planets for decades. However, it wasn't until recently that nanomachine generators and control systems could be miniturized enough to be used by a Matey, instead of a large ship.

[b]Technical and Historical Notes[/b]

Terrain is one of the key facets of combat, with the side controlling the better terrain able to control the battle. Knowing this, the Alliance began development of the "Terrain Control Project", designed to use terraforming nanomachines to craft the perfect battlefield for their soldiers. The first iterations of the project used retrofitted terraforming colony ships, however their control systems were not refined enough to handle the accuracy required by the project.
