VFX-00 Mave

Technical Data

Accomidation: Zero (Piloted by limited AI/remote control)
Height (Battroid Mode): 16.9 meters
Length (Fighter Mode): 18.0 meters
Weight: standard takeoff weight 11,860 kilograms; maximum takeoff weight 34,220 kilograms
Speed (Fighter Mode): Cruise: Mach 1.75, Max: Mach 3.3

Ability Data

Fighter Mode: The Mave's standard mode. A sleak, aerodynamic form capable of flight at mach speeds.
Battroid Mode: The Mave's main combat mode. Not as fast as Fighter mode, but capable of making better use of terrain, and the only form that can use certain weapons.
Gerwalk Mode: An alternate form which gives a balance between speed and combat.
Weapon Hardpoints: Maves have 6 hardpoints capable of carrying various weapons into combat. Like the Sylphid, the Mave's hardpoints are designed in a way to allow missiles to still fire when in Battroid mode.

Weapon Data

30mm Vulcans: Heavy vulcan cannons mounted on the fighter's "nose". Since the nose folds into the frame when transforming into Battroid mode, they are unusable. However the nose remains in place when in Gerwalk mode.
Quad Anti-Aircraft Laser Turret: The Mave mounts 4 laser cannons, mounted on the head in Battroid mode, and on an underside turret in Fighter and Gerwalk mode.
55mm Triple Gatling Gunpod: The Mave's main combat weapon. Similar to the standard Gatling Gunpod, however it has 3 barrels for a faster rate of fire. Because of the faster rate, the gunpod uses caseless ammunition so that it can fit more rounds in the same amount of space. The Gunpod is mounted on the left side of the chassis when in Fighter mode, and is held in the Mave's hands in Battroid and Gerwalk modes.
Anti-Air Missiles: Each of the Mave's hardpoints are capable of carrying 3 anti-air missiles, which are capable of homing on either laser or infra-red.
Swarming Missiles: Each of the Mave's hardpoints are capable of carrying a pod of 15 "swarmer" missiles. While low-powered, the missiles are fast and are capable of hitting a target from multiple angles, effectively "swarming" the target.

Technical and Historical Notes

The VFX-00 Mave is a prototype unit developed by the FAF to replace human pilots in the war against the JAM. Maves are controlled by limited AI systems, which are in turn directed by human operators back at the attack carrier. Since each operator could control a squadron or more of Maves, the human toll of the war could be decreased considerably. Costs of hiring, training, and supporting pilots would also be decreased, as the Mave AI can simply be copied into each unit.

In addition to the advances in automated piloting, the Mave also made use of new design theories to produce a more mobile aircraft. Though slightly smaller then the Super Sylph, the Mave could fly faster and carried a heavier vulcan and gatling gun, though the loadout of missiles was limited. FAF high command didn't want automated aircraft to carry bombs and heavy missiles after seeing what happened with Yukikaze. They figured that the larger number of units they could field would outweigh the loss of those weapons.

During it's first field test on Fairy, the one Mave prototype was taken over by Yukikaze after the JAM Super Sylph shot down Rei Fukai's heavily damaged VFF-31MR/D Super Sylph "Yukikaze". After this, the Mave prototype was reworked into the VFF-41 Mave "Yukikaze", a piloted unit, in order to control Yukikaze.
