The Supreme cCommander of the Alliance forces, angered by the continual losses against the 51st Combined Arms Regiment and their R-Matey, commanded the Alliance Werks to build him a Matey that would defeat the R-Matey once and for all. Studying old battle footage and records taken against the R-Matey, the engineers at Alliance Werks noticed 2 things which attributed to the R-Matey's strength. The first was that it could use a multitute of mission packs, or combine with support craft if necessary to fit the mission profile. This gave it an unhearalded versatility, meaning that there was no situation that the R-Matey could not be used to full effectiveness in. The second thing was that unlike most Alliance Mateys, the R-Matey has inherent armour and energy regeneration capabilities. The few Alliance units which possess either of those capabilities cannot do so very far from base, and thus are only useful in defensive situations. In order to meet the requirements, the Matey would need to match and exceed these capabilties. One engineer suggested developing the entire frame using self-repairing nanomachines, to provide extensive self-repair capabilities, instead of the few layers that R-Matey uses. However, the power requirements for such a system would demand a generator far larger then any Matey could use. That is, until another engineer remembered the work done years before on transfering energy via miniture wormholes to distant planets. By diverting the surplus energy generated by the Alliance homeworld through these wormholes, the Matey would not only be able to power the nanites and systems, but would also keep the battery backups topped up without the requirement of an internal generator, saving space which could be used on mounting a larger nanomachine control and production plant. The first problem was how to form the output wormholes. The original design called for large, fixed location wormholes to transfer the large amount of energy. This is unacceptable for a Matey, which could be anywhere with little notice. The amount of energy needed also required a fairly sizable wormhole, something that's not really mountable on a Matey. Then they noticed the MRC's "Blasters". The small, agile remote devices would be the perfect thing for mounting miniture wormhole generators. By spreading out the amount of energy sent through each wormhole, they were able to provide the appropriate amount of energy without requiring large and bulky transmitters. Each remote device would open a wormhole, send it's coordinates, receive the power, then transmit it via short-range microwave to the main unit. However, these remote crafts are also fairly fragile. Enemy attacks on them would easially rob the Matey of the energy it requires to function. To prevent this, each craft was equipped with a Dummy System. Because of the small size of each craft, and the large amount of energy they process all the time, the Dummy System is capable of being active at all times, rendering the crafts impossible to target and destroy. In the event that one of the crafts is required to engage an enemy unit, they're capable of discharging concentrated bolts of stored energy, either from the incoming wormhole or drawn back out of the main unit's reserves. These bolts of energy, while devestating to enemy armour, also causes cascading damage to their energy supplies, destroying their reserves. Now that the power problem was resolved, the engineers could get on with developing the frame. To help protect the unit from the weapons of the age, the nanomachines were programmed to build layers of energy-resistant coatings, which could be regenerated if damaged. While the armour isn't as resistant as the E-Matey's, it regenerates fast due to the larger number of nanomachines and the larger production plant. To help prevent excessive damage to the unit, a larger, more powerful energy shield was installed. For weaponry, the engineers decided that because of the large amount of nanomachines within the unit, there was no requirement for it to carry ammo or weapons. The Matey could simply use the nanomachines to form the desired weapons, and the ammo for them would come from the structure of the unit itself. This "multi-use nanomachine device" had 5 main forms. The first, and simplest, is the shape of a sword, for use in close-combat or for countering projectiles. The second form is that of a pistol. This form fires bullets who's nanomachines have been programed to "eat" away the structure of the target. However, the bullets are pretty weak and are easially deflected, but the target only needs to be hit with one for it to take effect. The third form is that of a simple rifle. The weapon deals a large amount of damage, and can be attached to a long-range targeter for higher accuracy. The fourth form is that of a large gatling gun, capable of producing and firing bullets at a very high rate of speed. The last form fires a large amount of piercing "shrapnel" projectiles to saturate a wide area. Ammo for this one uses up a large amount of the unit's structure, but the devistating effect that it has over enemy formations is worth it. With all these completed, Alliance Werks displayed the unit, christened the "Matey for the use of Destroying R-Matey and Various Other Targets: Combining Type - Mark IV" or MUDRVOT-CT-MkIV to the Supreme Commander for his approval. He liked the design, and started using it on the spot. However he prefered to call it "Tessie", after his wife.
