Having no use for it, the Alvis engineers started tinkering with it after they were done with the Mark Impulse. The first thing they did was install a Muspell receiver, like they were starting to update their other Fafners to utilize. The armour was also replaced with layers of Midgard anti-impact armour. The unit was also equipped with a Svalin shield to help cover up the weaknesses of the Midgard. To further prevent damage to the unit, an Aegis Shield emitter was mounted on the left shoulder, while another emitter which is able to project a more shield-like version of the Aegis Shield was mounted on the right wrist, in the event that the Svalin is ever destroyed. Unlike the larger version, which is connected to the internal reactors, the Landvaettir shield (as it was called) has an internal battery that will burn out after a number of attacks are taken. The unit was also used as a testbed for new weapon designs. One such design was to help increase the natural firepower of a Fafner unit, without needing to rely so heavily on external or hand-carried weapons. The generation and emitter systems of a Gegner rifle were enhanced and installed into the right arm of the Salvator model, with the emitter being in the palm. The resulting weapon, refered to as "Ketill", was slightly more powerful then a normal Gegner, and was completly internal to the unit, while not hindering normal operations. The unit also received a set of upgraded Durandal gatling cannons, mounted in the chest like the Mark Impulse. These Durandal IIs were twice the calibur of the originals, and also fired at a higher rate. While still useless against regular Festums, the Durandal II was more useful against the smaller Festums then the original, and so was used as a deterrant. The other testbed weapons were the usual external systems. One, called "Surt", was an upgraded Long Sword. The unit had a more powerful generator, resulting in a edge that could not be easially deflected, and dealt much greater damage when it hits. The other was a pair of enhanced Gegner rifles, called "Ull"s. The Ulls, while powerful on their own, could also be connected together to fire an even more powerful shot. However, the Salvator model has a "flaw" that the Alvis engineers couldn't have predicted. One day, while running performance tests on the lastest set of tweaks, the island came under attack by a number of Festums. While the main Fafner team was able to handle the majority of them, a single Festum managed to break through and attacked the Salvator. Unable to mount an effective counterattack, the Salvator was quickly overwhelmed and nearly assimilated. At the last moment, the test pilot was able to use the Ketill to destroy the Festum's core. The Midgard was able to prevent the unit from suffering any serious damage (which is especially good, since the pilot ejection system wasn't finished yet), however it was found that Salvators react strangely to Festum assimilations. Like the Mark Sein, the testbed Salvator counter-assimilated part of the Festum. This resulted in the Salvator gaining some of the self-regeneration abilities of a Festum, as well as the weapon enhancements like the Mark Sein. The structure regeneration is too slow to make any difference in combat, but the reactor became capable of keeping the energy reserves recharged, even without using the Muspell. Because of the changes to the Salvator's structure, however, the Muspell wasn't able to be removed. The engineers decided to leave it in just in case it's ever required. After these changes, the unit was designated as "Mark Destiny", and started receiving a few combat enhancements. A set of Medussa energy cannons were mounted on the back, as well as a holster for a pair of Main Blades, a Ruga Lance, and a Piram. In combat, the unit can also carry a standard Garm-44 and Rail Gun. With all these, the Mark Destiny was probably the most well armed Fafner unit ever built, and also one of the most well defended.
