The Alvis engineers, astonished by what they saw, started making a few Fafner to utilize them. Their work would not be completed in time for the Fafner, dubbed the Mark Impulse, to fight in the final battle with the Festums at the North Pole, however. Still, it was stored away should the need for the Fafners come up again. Hino Youji's design philosophies centre around protecting more soldiers, instead of killing more enemies. One of the technologies he produced for this was a new type of armour, which was refered to as "Midgard". This armour, when an electric charge was applied to it, negated the effects of many types of direct-impact based attacks. However, the armour seemed to have no effect against energy-based attacks, such as a Fafner's own Gegner rifle. However, to counter this deficiency, the Fafner came with a shield that had an anti-energy coating on it, and also had a small Aegis Shield generater mounted inside, to further reduce incoming damage. In addition to this, the Fafner was equipped with hardpoints to allow it to equip packs which allow it to expand it's capabilities. In addition, it also had a receiver which would allow it's energy reserves to be recharged remotely. The energy transmitters were installed on Alvis' Lindwurms and Devil Rays, and on the base itself. Of course, the Mark Impulse was not defenceless. The base frame came equipped with a number of weapons, which could be expanded by the equippable packs. By default, the Mark Impulse came with a fire-linked pair of Durandals permanently mounted in the chest area to provide point-defence. A pair of Main Blade nanodaggers were also mounted in the usual location, as with a Piram spike launcher. The Mark Impulse also carried a Garm-44 submachinegun and a Gegner energy rifle. The Alvis engineers were highly pleased with their resulting work, though saddened that it may never see any action. Regardless of the fact, the Mark Impulse would end up being the basis of further Fafner design in the future. Fafner Mark Impulse Alfheim General and Technical Data Model Number: N/A Name: Mark Impulse Alfheim Unit Type: Prototype anti-Festum Fafner Manufacturer: Alvis Operator: Alvis Accommodation: Pilot only Dimensions: Head height, 36.2m Weight: Unknown Construction: "Midgard" anti-impact armour over an unknown frame Powerplant: Unknown Equipment: Hardpoints for mounting mission packs; Siegfried System; "Muspell" reactor re-energizing system; "Sleipnir" thruster system Fixed Armaments: 2 x "Durandal" 20mm vulcan cannon, chest mounted; 2 x "Main Blade" daggers, mounted in the upper legs, hand-carried in use; 1 x "Piram" electrified spike launcher, 1 x "Svalin" shield, mounted on left arm; 1 x "Long Blade" energy sword, backpack-mounted, hand-carried in use Optional Armaments: 1 x "Garm-44" submachine gun, hand-carried; 1 x "Gegner" energy rifle, hand-carried Technical and Historical Notes The Alfheim pack was designed to be a high-speed striker. Most of the pack is dedicated to the added thrusters and their control and safety systems, with little space left to add weapons. The engineers felt that it was more important to have much greater agility and range then offensive capabilities. The only weapon that the pack adds is a Long Blade energy sword, for some added kick against Festums. Nothing else about the Mark Impulse was changed. Fafner Mark Impulse Jotunheim General and Technical Data Model Number: N/A Name: Mark Impulse Jotunheim Unit Type: Prototype anti-Festum Fafner Manufacturer: Alvis Operator: Alvis Accommodation: Pilot only Dimensions: Head height, 36.2m Weight: Unknown Construction: "Midgard" anti-impact armour over an unknown frame Powerplant: Unknown Equipment: Hardpoints for mounting mission packs; Siegfried System; "Muspell" reactor re-energizing system; Fixed Armaments: 2 x "Durandal" 20mm vulcan cannon, chest mounted; 2 x "Main Blade" daggers, mounted in the upper legs, hand-carried in use; 1 x "Piram" electrified spike launcher, 1 x "Svalin" shield, mounted on left arm; 2 x "Ruga Lance" swords, backpack-mounted, hand-carried in use Optional Armaments: 1 x "Garm-44" submachine gun, hand-carried; 1 x "Gegner" energy rifle, hand-carried Technical and Historical Notes The Jotunheim pack was designed to engage in short-range combat with enemy Festums. The pack carries 2 Ruga Lances, with the hilts modified so that both of them could be attached together. The pack also carries an external generator system to provide the Midgard with added power, allowing it to provide more protection without draining the internal reactor further. Fafner Mark Impulse Nidavellir General and Technical Data Model Number: N/A Name: Mark Impulse Nidavellir Unit Type: Prototype anti-Festum Fafner Manufacturer: Alvis Operator: Alvis Accommodation: Pilot only Dimensions: Head height, 34.6m Weight: Unknown Construction: "Midgard" anti-impact armour over an unknown frame Powerplant: Unknown Equipment: Hardpoints for mounting mission packs; Siegfried System; "Muspell" reactor re-energizing system Fixed Armaments: 2 x "Durandal" 20mm vulcan cannon, chest mounted; 2 x "Main Blade" daggers, mounted in the upper legs, hand-carried in use; 1 x "Piram" electrified spike launcher, 1 x "Svalin" shield, mounted on left arm; 2 x "Medusa" energy cannons, backpack-mounted, slung over shoulders in use; 1 x "Dragon-Tooth" long-range rifle, backpack-mounted, hand-carried in use; 2 x "Holler" missile launchers, backpack-mounted, slung over shoulders in use Optional Armaments: 1 x "Garm-44" submachine gun, hand-carried; 1 x "Gegner" energy rifle, hand-carried Technical and Historical Notes The Nidavellir pack was designed to provide long-range support. The pack carries 2 Medusa type energy cannons and 2 Holler type missile launchers mounted on opposing ends of a swivel mount, and a Dragon-Tooth rifle mounted off to the side. However, even though the pack comes with added batteries and generators to help support the added weaponry, it still draws extra power from the main engine to help keep everything charged, leaving the Midgard slightly weaker then usual.
